Sports Medicine Fellowship

Quincy Family Medicine launched a Sports Medicine Fellowship in 2004.  This is a continuation of the outstanding sports medicine training provided by dedicated faculty such as Dr. James Daniel, Sports Medicine Fellowship Director and Dr. Jetuan Rowley, Assistant Sports Medicine Fellowship Director.

The 12 month fellowship combines longitudinal clinical experiences and didactic conferences with training room and sporting even experiences at several events.

With society's increasing interest in health promotion through physical fitness and sport, it is imperative that primary care physicians are up to date with the medical science regarding sports medicine.

This fellowship holds the following goals:

1. Obtain the knowledge and competence in the non surgical management of injuries and illnesses related to exercise and sport.

2. Understand the role of sport and exercise in the overall health of the individual as well as society.

3. Obtain the skills necessary to be a team physician, including management of athletes in a training room as well as at the game.

4. Be prepared to teach sports medicine to community physician, as well as become part of an academic faculty.

5. Acquire a thorough knowledge of sports medicine and develop the ability to critically review the literature.

6. Exposure to nontraditional sports medicine patients such as the elderly, the very young and patients experiencing occupational related injuries.

LONGITUDINAL EXPERIENCES

  • Quincy Family Practice Center

    •      This is the base for the fellowship.  At the QFPC, the sports medicine fellow maintains their much needed primary care skills while honing their musculoskeletal skills.   Physicians trained in other specialties besides family medicine can be accommodated through excellent relationships with Blessing Hospital for emergency medicine physicians, as well as special patient panels for pediatricians and internal medicine physicians.

  • Body Motion Center

    •      This is the home of the sports medicine clinic to open in June, 2005.  The clinics at the BMC are limited to musculoskeletal problems related to sports or occupational activities.  It is a referral based clinic that draws from every clinic in Quincy, Illinois.  Patients are drawn from high school and college teams, as well as local sporting clubs and fitness centers.

    •      After each clinic at the Body Motion Center, time will be set aside to discuss specific musculoskeletal skills that will enhance the sports medicine fellow's knowledge and increase their skills in this field.

  • Quincy University

    •      This is one of the two colleges that the sports medicine fellow will rotate through.  QU has recently built a 10.5 million dollar student health center with approximately 1,000 square feet in their training room where they see athletes from 15 different varsity sports.  Attched to the training room is a patient exam room/office equipped with all the equipment a sport medicine physician would require.

  • Quincy University Health Center
    •      This clinic is from 2:00 to 5:00 pm every Wednesday.  At this clinic, acute illnesses of athletes, as well as  any student at QU are evaluated.  This clinic allows the sports medicine fellow to treat athletes who are involved in intramural sports.

  • Midwest Orthopedics
    •      Located in Hannibal Missouri, which is an easy 20 minute drive from Quincy, allows the fellow to observe state of the art musculoskeletal medicine in a rural city. The fellow will spend time with Dr. Christopher Bieniek who is Board Certified in General Orthopedics and Fellowship trained in hand and upper extremity.  Time will also be spent with Dr. Curt Burton and Dr. Richard Baumann. Here, casting skills, as well as knowledge of inpatient and outpatient procedures can be gained. Midwest Orthopedics has  a broad base of patients, who range in age from pediatrics to geriatrics.

  • Advanced Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation
    •      While working with physical therapists from Advanced Physical therapy, skills in manual therapy, neurorehabilitation, splinting and orthotics will be learned. The fellow will be able to appreciate the multidisciplinary approach to sports related problems, as well as the responsibilities of a medical director at a rehabilitation facility.
  • SIU Orthopedic Department
    •     Approximately 1-2 days a month will be set aside for elective time.  This includes exposure to the SIU Orthopedic Clinc in Springfield, IL approximately 90 miles away. Here, the fellow can spend time with orthopedic surgeons who specialize in foot and ankle problems, shoulder injuries and pediatric orthopedic disorders, as well as a Rheumatology clinic.

    •      The sports medicine fellow will also be able to entertain research ideas with outstanding researchers, such as Bob Wesley, MS (Head of Research at the Department of Family and Community Medicine) and Jerry Colliver, PhD (analysis and statistics chair of SIU School of Medicine).

  • Reed Podiatry Clinic
    •     One half day a month will be spent with Dr. Reed.  Here, the fellow will evaluate forefoot pathology, orthotics, preventative care, and the evaluation of the diabetic foot and ankle problems.  Experience in various outpatient experiences will be gained, such as toenail removal, evaluation of orthotics, wart removal and callous and corn removal.

  • University of Missouri
    •      One month a year the fellow will spend time with the Columbia Orthopedic Group under Dr. Patrick Smith and Jr. James Kinderknecht.  Here, the fellow will observe surgical procedures done at the institute for Outpatient Surgery.
    •       The fellow will aslo spend time at the University of Missourie Athletic Training room.   During this time, the fellow will be exposed to a Division I athletic event.

  • Prairie Cardiovascular Center
    •      Exercise stress testing and exercise prescriptions are one key to a primary care sports medicine practice.  In order to gain experience in this, the fellow will work under Dr. Wes Moses for at least two weeks during the first month.  The Prarie Cardiovascular Center is a nationally known center that trains physicians in exercise testing.
    •      The primary patient will be one who is a high risk cardiac patient.  At first, the fellow will observe such skills as EKG interpretation and protocol understanding.  As the fellow gains experience, demonstration of these skills and participation in exercise testing will be done.  After this experience, the fellow will be able to start VO2 Max testing in the Quincy University Lab.

Game Coverage

The sports medicine fellow will work with a number of teams as team physician, with consultation with faculty members.  In this role, the fellow provides care for an even mixture of men an women sports at both Quincy University and Culver Stockton.

Training Room Rounds

The fellow visits both Quincy University and Culver-Stockton College at least once a week with a faculty member, in addition to the weekly sports medicine clinic at the Body Motion Center.  Here, the fellow will work with the team coach and/or trainer.

Skill Based Rotations

Several opportunities exist through the year to participate in conferences dedicated to sports medicine, as well as sporting events.  Interest in a study, poster or free standing paper to the  AMSSM conference will be encouraged.  Screening of high school students for a pre-participation sports physical will be done in cooperation with Blessing Hospital Sports Care as well as Advanced Physical Therapy.  Physicals are completed in accordance with the monograph of joint sponsorship with the American Academy of Family Physicians, Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, as well as other organizations.

Mass Participation Events

In the course of the year, the fellow will help plan coverage for one of the community's mass participation events, such as the YMCA Annual Turkey Run or the National Youth Sports Program.
