Our Future
What's New at Quincy Family Medicine
On November 2, 2009 we transitioned to being
completely electronic. No longer do we have
stacks of charts sitting in various places. Now, all
of our notes, prescriptions and orders are put in
through the computer. This will help cut down
on patient errors, giving us a more readable and up
to date patient information. Also, clinic
information can be accessed from the hospital,
allowing residents on call ability to see the
patient's medical care for the last 5 years. We are
currently working on interfacing the laboratory and
radiology services from Blessing hospital as well as
Quincy Family Practice. When this is finished,
these results not only will flow directly into the
medical record, but we will also be able to see
trends and graphs. Our last step will be an OB
module that will allow the hospital Labor and
Delivery to have an up to date OB record at all
times.
We are all excited about this new transition!
Welcome to our new Sports Medicine Fellow
Dr. Gina Pontius will be joining us as our new
Sports Medicine Fellow in August, as we say farewell
to Dr. Alec DeCastro.
Dr. Pontius will graduate from the SIU Quincy Family
Medicine Residency Program in July.
She received her medical degree from St.
Louis University in 2007.
Gina is married to Jared, a
teacher and coach at Palmyra High School in Palmyra,
Missouri. They have one
child, beautiful Leah, who will be one in September.
Gina is interested in all high school
athletics and has a special interest in running
injuries. She enjoys
golfing, Cardinal’s baseball, and spending time with
her friends and family.
We've expanded!
In September of last year, we completed a
renovation of our current building. What used
to hold two medical practices, now is home to only
Quincy Family Practice. This allowed us to
double the size of our waiting room, as well as
provide room for the two grants we are currently
working with. This has been a long awaited
change which allows us to keep moving forward with
medical care and resident education.
Peds CARE: Prevention, Early Detection, and Screening for Children at Risk Emotionally
Illinois Children's Healthcare Foundation Integrating Primary Care and Mental Health Services
The Peds Care Grant was written
by Rhonda Kewney, LCSW and Shirley Longlett, LCPC;
whom identified a huge need for children services
and had a vision on how the program would come
together.
Peds Care grant is providing
$500, 000, over the duration of two years, to
identify children at risk for behavioral/mental
health problems at an early age and to provide
appropriate preventive mental health care and
interventions. The goal is to integrate childhood
mental health into primary care to prevent or
diffuse emerging behavioral or mental health
problems before they become serious mental health
problems.

collaborating with Transitions of Western Illinois
to have Missy's services ten hours a week. Her first

parents. Child care will be provided through the
collaboration so parents can attend and be assured
they have child care.

Building the Patient Centered Medical Home: Tools for Family Physicians
IDPH
Center for Rural HealthFamily Medicine Residency Training Grant
Illinois Department of Public Health Center for Rural Health has approved a three-year grant that allows us the opportunity to more fully prepare our learners to succeed in the changing medical environment where physicians will be required to measure the quality of care they provide and where reimbursement may be tied to measured levels of performance.
The purpose of the proposed project is to incorporate curricular components into existing curricula that will insure that our graduates will have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high quality care and service within financially viable patient-centered medical homes that meet the standards set forth by primary care associations in February, 2007. Those principles are: a personal physician-patient relationship, physician-directed medical practice, whole person orientation, coordinated care, quality and safety, enhanced access and adequate payment. This project will translate those principles into residency education and demonstrate practical applications within the clinic setting. Establishing a practice recognized as a fully qualified PCMH will increase the likelihood of our graduates achieving a financially successful and professionally rewarding career.
