Behavioral Medicine / Psychiatry Rotation
Curriculum Goals and Objectives
The Behavioral Medicine/Psychiatry rotation is designed to provide the second year resident with knowledge, skills and attitudes to competently and compassionately treat emotional, behavioral and mental health disorders. This will include a focus on individual and professional self awareness to assist the resident in understanding personal, family and cultural influences that impact him/herself and may affect relationships with patients and other professionals. These experiences will be used to assist the resident in continued revision and development of their personal plan.
Upon successful completion of this rotation, the resident will achieve the following objectives:
| In the area of BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE the resident will be able to: |
- Understand the DSM IV-TR diagnostic system
- Recognize, screen, provide appropriate anticipatory guidance, treat or refer:
- Non-psychiatric disorders commonly seen in primary care
- Common childhood behavioral disorders
- Common adult emotional or mental disorders
- Substance related disorders
- Eating disorders
- Personality disorders
- Domestic violence including emotional, physical or sexual partner abuse, child or elderly abuse
- Other disorders that may interfere with patient functioning
- Identify when and how to appropriately refer to local psychiatric and behavioral health services.
- Manage medications appropriate for patients with emotional or mental health problems

| In the area of PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH the resident will be able to: |
- Enhance personal and professional self awareness through discussion and videotape sessions
- Increase confidence in gaining patient adherence to treatment plan and accept the patient right of self determination for health care issues
- Analyze ability to cope with stressful personal or professional situations and develop a personal plan to address appropriate issues

| In the area of MEDICAL INTERVIEWING, the resident will be able to: |
- Demonstrate counseling skills appropriate for the primary care setting
- Compassionately provide effective counseling for patients who are compromised by current health practices
- Manage psychiatric emergencies and provide initial crisis counseling
