Curricula Descriptions

Dermatology Curriculum

Goals:
  1. To describe and diagnose common skin disorders
  2. To recognize the skin manifestations of systemic illnesses
  3. To understand basic principles of dermatology therapy
  4. To learn procedures relevant to goal 1, 2, and 3
Objectives:
  1. Make precise, detailed and anatomically correct descriptions of dermatologic lesions.
    1. Primary skin lesions: color, size, shape, distribution, macule, papule, nodule, plaque, pustle, vesicles, bullae, and wheals.
    2. Secondary skin lesions: scales, crusts, erosions, ulcers, fissures, atrophy, scars, and hyperkeraton.
    3. Special skin lesions: excorration, comedone, milia, cyst, burrow, lidentifications, telaniectana, petechaie, purpura.
  2. Know in detail the pathophysiology, diagnostic workup and treatment of the following dermatologic conditions.
    1. Acne
    2. Dermatitis, Allergic and Irritant (Including eczema, poison ivy, and diaper dermatitis)
    3. Dermatophytosis and Candidosis
    4. Pyodermas and Viral Exanthems
    5. Urticaria and Erythema Multiforme
    6. Melanoma and Melanocytic Nevi
    7. Sun Damage, Keratoses, Cancer
    8. Common Bites and Stings, Scabites and Lice
    9. Warts
    10. Psoriasis
  3. Read about and recognize the following dermatologic conditions:
    1. Erythroderma
    2. Sarcordosis
    3. Alopecias
    4. Lupus Erythematosis
    5. Porphyrias
    6. Chronic Bullous Diseases (Pemphigus group)
    7. Syphilis
    8. Uncommon Infections (Sporotrichosis, Histoplasmosis)
    9. Ichthyoses
  4. Specific Objectives (know in detail):
    1. Learn to grade acne and manage grades 1, 2, and 3 precisely.
      Learn the complications of acne and acne therapy.
    2. Learn the basic treatment regiments for:
      1. contact dermatitis
      2. atopic dermatitis
      3. Discuss the rehabilitation of patients with severe, irritant, occupational eczema. Understand the obstacles to recovery.
    3. List and discuss the common fungal infections.
      Know how to do a KOH preparation properly.
      Know the usual artifacts in KOH preparations.
      Know the proper treatment of the various fungal infections.
    4. Discuss furunculosis, cause and treatment.
      Discuss erysipelas, cause and treatment.
      Discuss herpes simplex and zoster, cause and treatment.
      Discuss pityriasis rosea, cause and treatment.
    5. Discuss the treatment of chronic urticaria.
    6. Know in detail the characteristics of a nevus which indicate that excision is necessary.
      Know the Clark-Mimm melanoma grading system for melanoma.
    7. Understand sun induced skin cancer? Discuss practical office management and the use of 5-fluorouracil. Understand preventive measures.
    8. Know the management of brown recluse bites.
      Discuss the treatment of scabies.
    9. List 4 means of treating common and venereal warts.
    10. Describe the differential diagnosis of psoriasis.
      Describe the treatment of mild psoriasis.
    11. Know basic dermatologic treatment principles (The Derm Treatment Triangle).
  5. Pharmacology (know these dermatologic pharmaceuticals in detail, including clinical use and complications)
    1. Topical: Antibiotics
      1. Antifungals
      2. Kwell
      3. 5-Fluorouracil
      4. Liquid nitrogen
      5. Retinoids
      6. Tars
      7. Drying agents
      8. Podophyllum and Aldara
      9. Monsels solution
      10. Steroids
    2. Systemic: Retinoids (including Accutane)
      1. Antibiotics (especially Tetracycline)
      2. Methotrexate
      3. Dapsone
      4. Antihistamines
      5. Antifungals: Fluconazole
        1. Terbinafine
        2. Griseofulvin
        3. Amphotericin B
    3. Dermatology Treatment Triangle
    4. Topical Steroid Potency Chart
  6. Procedural Skills (learn to perform these procedures)
    1. Punch Biopsy
    2. Shave Biopsy
    3. Excision with superficial or deep repair
    4. Radiosurgery
    5. Cryosurgery
    6. Incision & Drainage
    7. KOH scraping and interpretation
    8. Toenail excision
