Cardiac Stress ECG Testing Curriculum

Elective time may be used for an in-depth experience with cardiology testing. The stress test experience may be centered at Blessing Hospital, Quincy Medical Group or The Prairie Cardiology Group at St. John Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. This elective is usually 2 weeks long. Knowledge in ECG interpretation is strongly suggested before this rotation.

During this time the resident will receive extensive experience in all modalities of cardiac testing and interpretation including:
  1. Exercise treadmill testing
  2. Exercise treadmill testing with imaging with cardiolite
  3. Exercise treadmill testing with imaging with echocardiography
  4. Pharamologic stress testing with adenosive, persantine, dopamine and imaging with cardiolite or echo.
The resident will become familiar with the following:
  1. Physiology of exercise
  2. Indications and contraindication of the above tests
  3. Treadmill ECG interpretation
  4. Dictating a treadmill report
  5. Performance of treadmill testing
  6. Explaining the findings to the patient
Curriculum Mechanics:
  • Contact the department or hospital site to make arrangements. Documentation in New Innovations is critical for future privileging.
Evaluation:
  • Successful completion of this elective will be determined by the program director in consultation with the supervising attending physician.
