Human Behavior and Mental Health Curriculum

Goals: Evaluations
  1. Residents will demonstrate skills in developing rapport and conducting effective patient interviews
  2. Residents will gather patient information in a manner that is organized, efficient, and compassionate, demonstrating medical knowledge and communication skills that encourage patient confidence.
  3. Residents will demonstrate knowledge of normal individual developmental stages from birth to death and provide anticipatory guidance for their patients.
  4. Residents will have knowledge of family developmental tasks and be able to provide anticipatory guidance for their patients.
  5. Residents will be able to assist patients with psychosocial problems by providing counseling intervention or referring to another resource.
  6. Residents will identify more serious social, emotional, behavioral and mental health problems in individuals and families and provide primary care treatment and/or referral
  7. Residents will be able provide appropriate primary care crisis intervention for individuals, families, and communities
  8. Residents will be knowledgeable of community resources for their patients and appropriately relate to such resources.
  9. Residents will be knowledgeable of ethical and legal issues as it relates to primary care practice

  • Family Practice Service/ as well as other primary care rotation

Objectives: ...
  1. Demonstrate a healthy level of self awareness/emotional wellness which will allow the resident to monitor stress levels and maintain good mental health
  2. Deal effectively with personally difficult situations so they do not interfere with patient care
  3. Work effectively with other professionals as a member of the health care team
  4. Establish effective communication and relationships with patients
  5. Know the developmental stages of the life cycle and appropriately assist patients with anticipatory guidance
  6. Know the stages and tasks of the family life cycle and provide anticipatory guidance.
  7. Demonstrate sensitivity to presenting medical problem, age, gender, sexual orientation, religious preferences and cultural orientation
  8. Understand and treat the emotional aspects of non-psychiatric disorders
  9. Distinguish between normal and abnormal development and be able to identify when intervention needs to occur in children, adolescents, adults and the geriatric population
  10. Provide assessment of functioning in individuals and families to determine necessary non-medical interventions as well as medical interventions.
  11. Demonstrate effectiveness of assisting patients with behavioral change-understand the stages of change in the modification of behaviors
  12. Demonstrate skills in primary care counseling interventions including brief therapy intervention, parent-child guidance, couple counseling, crisis intervention and family meetings.
  13. Be able to identify serious problem areas or mental disorders and provide the patient with compassionate and competent treatment options
  14. Demonstrate knowledge of psychopharmacology and prescribe medication appropriately
  15. Will appropriately screen and treat alcoholism and other addictive disorders
  16. Will be able to screen and appropriately intervene in situations of domestic violence including emotional, physical, sexual abuse and/or neglect and do so for children, adolescent, adult, or elder abuse.
  17. Demonstrate knowledge and application of ethics in patient care including patient self determination, confidentiality, and issues concerning quality of life
  18. Know and effectively deal with women’s issues including the biological and psychosocial impact of pregnancy, delivery and care of the newborn child
  19. Demonstrates sensitivity to sexual orientation and provides counseling for sexual dysfunction
  20. Know community resources, how and when to refer, and show ability to establish a working relationship with such resources

Coping with stress-maintaining good health During orientation Rhonda Kewney will coordinate these noon conferences. Presenters may be a faculty member, resident, or other person with specific expertise in a behavioral medicine area.

Residents must have a mixed panel of patients they see in clinic and meet at least minimum number of patient visits each year per RRC guidelines

Emergency Room ...
Residents will appropriately and compassionately treat victims of trauma, patients in crisis or patients presenting with acute or chronic medical problems
  • Evaluations from ER attendings or senior residents/peer reviews
Community Outreach Clinic (COC) ...
Residents will provide appropriate compassionate care for patients at COC-demonstrate knowledge of appropriate community resources to offer as an additional support for patients.
  • Evaluation from COC director and faculty attendings at the nursing home.
Pediatrics ...
Residents will competently care for children, demonstrate interview techniques appropriate for the patient’s age, and provide anticipatory guidance for parents
  • Evaluations from pediatric and family practice service rotations

  • Patient evaluations of their physician
  • Use of anticipatory guidance checklist in chart
Residents will have knowledge of childhood disorders, appropriately diagnose, treat, and monitor patient care
