- Residents will demonstrate skills in developing rapport and conducting effective patient interviews
- Residents will gather patient information in a manner that is organized, efficient, and compassionate, demonstrating medical knowledge and communication skills that encourage patient confidence.
- Residents will demonstrate knowledge of normal individual developmental stages from birth to death and provide anticipatory guidance for their patients.
- Residents will have knowledge of family developmental tasks and be able to provide anticipatory guidance for their patients.
- Residents will be able to assist patients with psychosocial problems by providing counseling intervention or referring to another resource.
- Residents will identify more serious social, emotional, behavioral and mental health problems in individuals and families and provide primary care treatment and/or referral
- Residents will be able provide appropriate primary care crisis intervention for individuals, families, and communities
- Residents will be knowledgeable of community resources for their patients and appropriately relate to such resources.
- Residents will be knowledgeable of ethical and legal issues as it relates to primary care practice

- Demonstrate a healthy level of self awareness/emotional wellness which will allow the resident to monitor stress levels and maintain good mental health
- Deal effectively with personally difficult situations so they do not interfere with patient care
- Work effectively with other professionals as a member of the health care team

- Understand and treat the emotional aspects of non-psychiatric disorders
- Distinguish between normal and abnormal development and be able to identify when intervention needs to occur in children, adolescents, adults and the geriatric population
- Provide assessment of functioning in individuals and families to determine necessary non-medical interventions as well as medical interventions.
- Demonstrate effectiveness of assisting patients with behavioral change-understand the stages of change in the modification of behaviors
- Demonstrate skills in primary care counseling interventions including brief therapy intervention, parent-child guidance, couple counseling, crisis intervention and family meetings.
- Be able to identify serious problem areas or mental disorders and provide the patient with compassionate and competent treatment options
- Demonstrate knowledge of psychopharmacology and prescribe medication appropriately
- Will appropriately screen and treat alcoholism and other addictive disorders
- Will be able to screen and appropriately intervene in situations of domestic violence including emotional, physical, sexual abuse and/or neglect and do so for children, adolescent, adult, or elder abuse.
- Demonstrate knowledge and application of ethics in patient care including patient self determination, confidentiality, and issues concerning quality of life
- Know and effectively deal with women’s issues including the biological and psychosocial impact of pregnancy, delivery and care of the newborn child
- Demonstrates sensitivity to sexual orientation and provides counseling for sexual dysfunction
- Know community resources, how and when to refer, and show ability to establish a working relationship with such resources
