Independent Study Curriculum

Elective time may be used for academic pursuit:

Independent Study
  • The purpose of this elective is to allow the resident to pursue a family medicine topic in depth. The time may include continuity of care clinic experience or be exclusively used for researching, studying and preparing a written or oral report on a family medicine topic. The length of time devoted to independent study and the specifics of when this may be granted it at the discretion of the Program Director or Director of Academic Affairs.
Rotation Mechanics:
  1. The project goals and objectives should be defined in writing prior to or as early as possible during the study period.
  2. A project supervisor should be identified.
  3. Meet with supervisor and decide on a timeline and find report format (written or oral presentation) for the elective.
  4. A report of the independent study outcome must be submitted within six weeks of the independent study block. An oral presentation should be presented as a noon conference or grand rounds type format.
Evaluation:
  • A formal evaluation will be completed by the supervising faculty and be reviewed with the resident. Satisfactory completion of the rotation will be determined by the Program Director in consultation with the project supervisor.
