Neurology Curriculum

Goals:
A resident physician will become knowledgeable in identifying neurological disease, the prognosis for such conditions, and the appropriate role of the neurologist/neurosurgeon in diagnosis and treatment. In addition the resident will develop an understanding of the impact of neurological conditions on family, home and social settings.
Objectives:
  1. To develop knowledge of:
    1. Normal neuroanatomy
    2. Normal growth and development
    3. Effects on aging on the nervous system
    4. Disorders of motor function including:
      1. Parkinson’s Disease
      2. Tremor
      3. Dystonia
      4. Chorea
      5. Upper/Lower motor neuron dysfunction
    5. Demyelinating disorders
    6. Cerebrovascular disease including:
      1. Stroke/TIA
      2. Carotid stenosis
      3. Aneurysm
    7. Disorders of hearing including tinnitus
    8. Vertigo
    9. Disorders of cognitive function and communication including:
      1. Dementia
      2. Encephalopathy
    10. Disorders of consciousness:
      1. Syncope
      2. Seizures
      3. Coma
      4. Brain death
    11. Headache
      1. Tension
      2. Migraine
      3. Subarach hemorrhage
      4. Meningitis
      5. Temporal Arteritis
      6. Aneurysm
    12. Spinal cord disorders
    13. Sleep disorders
    14. Disorders of neuromuscular junction:
      1. Muscular Dystrophy
      2. Peripheral Neuropathy
      3. Myopathy
      4. Myasthenia Gravis
      5. Gullian-Barre Syndrome
    15. Abnormal development disorders
      1. Developmental delay
      2. Mental retardation
      3. Learning disabilities
      4. Attention Deficit Disorder
    16. Psychiatric disorders mimicking neurologic disease
    17. Pain management
    18. Genetic implications of neurological conditions
  2. Skills
    1. Performing an appropriate neurologic oriented history and neurological physical exam
    2. Performing mental status exam
    3. Performing pediatric development assessment
    4. Identifying situations requiring urgent/immediate intervention
    5. Ability to formulate appropriate plans for investigation and management
    6. Appropriate use of diagnostic tests based on indications, risks, contraindications, cost
    7. Performing lumbar puncture
    8. Appropriate use of consultants to assist in management
    9. Appropriate use of community resources to aid in the chronic management/rehabilitation of debilitating conditions
