Rural Medicine Curriculum

Goals:
  1. To increase the understanding of specific health, developmental, and situational realities of rural patients and settings.
  2. To increase understanding of the role of Family Physicians in rural health care.
Objective:
  1. To introduce family practice residents to the issues and concepts unique to rural health care.
  2. To increase resident knowledge and awareness of how communications and transportation can be used to neutralize the potential for professional isolation.
  3. To increase residents’ appreciation of benefits and difficulties of the rural lifestyle.
  4. To recognize the value of increased clinical skills and knowledge in areas where technological resources are scarce.
  5. To increase the residents’ awareness, knowledge and skills in practice management unique to the rural settings.
  6. Be able to describe how Critical Access Hospitals benefit rural communities.
  7. To identify innovative health care practices, management, and systems designed to increase access to care in rural areas.
  8. Identification of counseling techniques, strategies, resources available and effective for rural patients
