Substance Abuse Curriculum
| Goals: |
| To identify substance use/abuse with its dysfunctional behaviors and to identify appropriate treatment resources/modalities based on stage of disease. |
| Objectives: |
- To develop knowledge of:
- Personal barriers to diagnosis and treatment
- Commonly used drugs and their physiologic effects, metabolism, routes of administration
- Risk factors for abuse/dependence, e.g. environmental and genetic
- Criteria for defining abuse, dependence, addiction
- Symptoms, physical signs, laboratory evidence of use
- Serum and urine drug screening
- Disease concept of substance use disorders
- The impact of substance disorders on society and the family
- Enabling behavior
- Legal and ethical issues:
- Confidentiality
- Pregnancy
- The impaired health professional
- Management of withdrawal
- Community treatment resources
- Stages of behavior change
- Skills
- Prevention through education
- Use of appropriate screening instruments
- Appropriate treatment referral
- Assessment of current level of use and its impact on social, psychologic and physical well-being
- Medical management of drug intoxication and withdrawal
- The brief office intervention
- Attitudes:
- Substance dependence is preventable
- Anticipation and acceptance of denial, dishonesty, and anger as common behaviors inherent to substance use
- Understanding that substance dependence is a chronic, relapsing and remitting but treatable disease
