Substance Abuse Curriculum

Goals:
To identify substance use/abuse with its dysfunctional behaviors and to identify appropriate treatment resources/modalities based on stage of disease.
Objectives:
  1. To develop knowledge of:
    1. Personal barriers to diagnosis and treatment
    2. Commonly used drugs and their physiologic effects, metabolism, routes of administration
    3. Risk factors for abuse/dependence, e.g. environmental and genetic
    4. Criteria for defining abuse, dependence, addiction
    5. Symptoms, physical signs, laboratory evidence of use
    6. Serum and urine drug screening
    7. Disease concept of substance use disorders
    8. The impact of substance disorders on society and the family
    9. Enabling behavior
    10. Legal and ethical issues:
      1. Confidentiality
      2. Pregnancy
      3. The impaired health professional
    11. Management of withdrawal
    12. Community treatment resources
    13. Stages of behavior change
  2. Skills
    1. Prevention through education
    2. Use of appropriate screening instruments
    3. Appropriate treatment referral
    4. Assessment of current level of use and its impact on social, psychologic and physical well-being
    5. Medical management of drug intoxication and withdrawal
    6. The brief office intervention
  3. Attitudes:
    1. Substance dependence is preventable
    2. Anticipation and acceptance of denial, dishonesty, and anger as common behaviors inherent to substance use
    3. Understanding that substance dependence is a chronic, relapsing and remitting but treatable disease
