SIU School of Medicine
 SIU School of Medicine was established in 1969 to help meet the requirement for additional health manpower in Illinois. It is the mandate of the School to relate to the health needs of central and southern Illinois; programs and policies of the School are designed with this intent. The community-based Family Practice residencies were conceived as a result, with the resolve to target underserved areas of our state.
The School of Medicine places special emphasis on primary care and is dedicated to the concept of family medicine. Approximately 25% of graduates choose residencies in Family Practice; many of these students remain within the SIU network.
In addition to Quincy, the Family Practice residency programs in Springfield, Carbondale, and Decatur are also affiliated with the Department of Family and Community Medicine, SIU School of Medicine in Springfield. There is close liaison between these centers to provide sharing of ideas and resources. Residents have the opportunity to engage in a variety of electives and CME programs at the medical school.
The faculty of the Quincy Family Practice residency are appointed to the Department of Family and Community Medicine, SIU School of Medicine. This appointment provides an opportunity to formulate departmental policy, as well as the content of Family Practice clerkships for medical students. Dr. Jerry Kruse is currently Chair of the Department.
Quincy receives a significant portion of its funding from the Illinois Board of Higher Education via the SIU School of Medicine. This, in addition to funding from Blessing Hospital and income from patient care and grants, gives the Quincy Family Practice program a solid and stable financial base.
