Conferences
Noon conferences
There is a noon conference at the Family Practice Center or Blessing Hospital five times per week. Frequently, lunch is provided at the Family Practice Center. The conference generally occurs from 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. and Blessing Hospital conferences are 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. These conferences include regularly scheduled conferences such as obstetric conference, orthopedic conference, practice management conference and others. Also, these conferences include lectures from attending physicians in the community on diverse topics as well as case presentations and journal clubs. Attendance at noon conference is mandatory. Residents should enter the conference room no later than 12:30, except under special circumstances. If a resident is unable to make it to a noon conference, the resident should contact the resident secretary or the administrative secretary as soon as this is known. You can be excused from noon conference only for imminent OB deliveries or in case of critically ill patients. Attendance is counted only if the evaluation form is filled and signed. It is a requirement of the residency program that residents attend a minimum of 80% of the noon conferences in order to successfully complete the residency.
There are several different conferences that residents will attend through out the year.
Director conferences.
Each month, there will be a Director/Chief Resident Conference. The Program Director will bring issues of importance to the residents, and the residents are encouraged to bring any issues to the Director at that time. At these conferences any topic is fair game. Also, if there is a specific grievance that a resident has, there is a formal grievance procedure that may be followed. Developed by the SIU School of Medicine, a copy of this grievance procedure can be found in the reference section of this manual. Before this procedure is instituted, it is suggested that a resident talk with the Chief Resident, their faculty advisor, the Director of Resident Affairs and/or the Program Director.
Is It True?
Is It True will be held monthly at the Family Practice Center. For most months, an article will be handed out two weeks prior to the conference. Every resident is expected to have read this article, and may be called upon during the conference. Three to four Is It True conferences a year will not have articles, but focus on alternative information resources, internet information resources, scanning journals quickly, and evaluating abstracts.
Case Conference
Each resident will be expected to present case conferences. The cases that are the basis of these conferences may be the resident’s own patient in the Family Practice Center or patients encountered on other services. The residents are encouraged to present patients of the Quincy Family Practice Center as much as possible and to emphasize all aspects of patient care including psychosocial information. The residents are encouraged to present the case conferences as an exercise in clinical decision-making, presenting pieces of information and then allowing fellow residents to discuss the problem list, differential diagnosis and proper therapeutic intervention. The resident should also prepare a general discussion concerning the patient’s condition for presentation after the case is discussed.
Pediatric Early Bird Rounds.
Every Friday morning at 8:00, pediatric early bird rounds are held at Blessing Hospital. These lectures occur via interactive video. These conferences are highly suggested for all residents to supplement the pediatric curriculum. It is understood by faculty that occasionally residents will be unable to attend them because of rounds that are occurring on other services at that time. Residents on inpatient and outpatient pediatric rotations are required to attend. It is an excellent opportunity to interact with community pediatricians.
Blessing Hospital Continuing Medical Education (CME) Conferences.
They may be from one hour to four hours in length. One or two one hour conferences a month are required, these will appear on the noon conference schedule. Residents are encouraged to attend the 4 hour conferences if possible.
Conferences at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.
SIU provides a variety of conferences throughout the year. There is a special policy regarding the use of educational time and money for these conferences – this is discussed with education leave benefits in the resident’s manual.
Hospital Medical Staff and Departmental Meetings.
Occasionally, in place of the Family Practice noon conferences, medical staff meetings and departmental meetings occur at the hospital. The residents do not have voting power at these meetings. Resident physicians will be assigned to a Blessing Hospital committee after six months of their second year and serve for one year. (More information in section “Committees”).
